## Commentary

The monumental staircase in the San Giorgio Monastery was designed and built by Baldassare Longhena between 1641 and 1643. The windowed galleries of this great staircase permit light to flood in. The floors and balustrades are all richly decorated, some with polychrome marble. In the staircase hall, where two parallel flights ascend along the walls to a common landing, Longhena proved his consummate skill as a master of scenic architecture.
