## Commentary

The career of Giovanni d'Agostino was closely linked to that of his father, with whom he may have been apprenticed. He made a font for the Pieve, Arezzo, while he was working with Agostino on the chapels in the church \(1331-32\). Its reliefs, representing scenes from the Life of St John the Baptist, are typical examples of his style, in which illusionistic devices like those of painting are employed, and the marble is worked with smooth, slurring strokes. His figures resemble those of Agostino, but they are less elegant.
