# View of the castle [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, German]() - Date: 1151-1200 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary Residential and defensive buildings were amongst the most important items of medieval secular architecture. Their austere character originated in the fortified towns and castles where the areas of residence and defence were brought into maximum functional harmony with one another. The principles of castle building were determined by the nature of the landscape. The ground plan at Ulrichsburg \(Château de Saint-Ulrich\) has been completely adapted to the mountainous site.
