# View of the Camera Cinese [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [TIEPOLO, Giovanni Domenico]() - Date: 1751-1800 - Technique: Fresco ## Commentary The picture shows a view of the Camera Cinese \(Chinese Room\), the last room in the suite in the Foresteria of the Villa Valmarana. The decoration of this room makes use of the repertoire of chinoiserie, so popular in the eighteenth century, which was disseminated not only in the intricate patterns of silks, porcelains, and furniture, but also on wallpapers. and which was employed in courtly room decor in the form of large-format wall pictures. The principal scenes are the Mandarin's Walk, the Offering of Fruits to Moon Goddess, and the Textile Merchant. They constitute a splendid example of the painter's imagination, which is revealed in his ability to describe, with surprising realism the events of the East known to him only through a few elements he might have become familiar with in Venice and in Würzburg, and from prints that were in circulation in Venice.
