## Commentary

In France the movement towards naturalism persisted throughout the fifteenth century. It is particularly marked in the large Entombment groups, so popular in the North. Yet, if these are life-like, there is nothing of the marked brutality of works accross the Rhine, and a certain Gallic lyricism pervades even these harsher representations.
