## Commentary

The picture shows the head of Isaiah, one of the statues on the façade of the Cathedral of Siena. Giovanni Pisano knew that the figures would be seen from a good distance below, so he dramatically exaggerated their poses and carving, and positioned them to lean forward into space. In the figure of Isaiah, for example, he peppered the prophet&#39;s beard with numerous drill holes which enhance the dramatic play of light and shadow across and around the face.
