## Commentary

In this painting the Evangelist is represented as a youthful visionary in a characteristic Baroque, diagonal position, in a pose that returns later in the Romantic portraits of poets, as a pose appropriate for the sacred moment of inspiration. There is a variant of this painting in the Prado, Madrid.
