## Commentary

The task of producing the bronze doors took Andrea Pisano to the limits of his goldsmith's art, which may explain why in 1333-34 he extended his range into the realm of monumental sculpture. His early pieces in marble, however, still show the signs of work with soft wax: a small statue of the Virgin and Child \(Bode Museum, Berlin\) and the statues of Christ and St Reparata \(Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence\). Of all the figures carved for the Duomo and those attributed to Andrea, the most important is that of Santa Reparata, the patron saint to whom the earlier basilica had been dedicated. Her gentle, almost shy attitude, the manner in which the volume of her figure is rendered, are both characteristic of a Gothic style that was not limited to France or Germany. The figure seems to recall the same ideals of reticent elegance that are found in the celebrated statue of Uta in Naumburg Cathedral, Germany.
