# The Penitent St Jerome [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [LOTTO, Lorenzo]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Oil on panel, 56 x 40 cm ## Commentary In this painting, Jerome's aspect as penitent prevails markedly over that of intellectual which was typical of Lotto's earlier versions of the subjects. Thus greater emphasis is given to such details as the small but poisonous asps near his feet, the grasshopper in the foreground, and the bird skeleton at lower left.
