## Commentary

This painting is an early work by Carel Fabritius. It is one of the most appealing religious pictures of the 1640s to come out of Rembrandt&#39;s circles, and a great example of Rembrandt&#39;s legacy as a teacher of dramatic staging and the study of naturalistic effects.
