## Commentary

South doors panels: 13. The disciples visit St John 1330 Gilded bronze Baptistery, Florence Each door contains 10 scenes in the upper section from the life of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of Florence to whom the Baptistery is dedicated. The picture shows one of the scenes on the right door. In 23 out of the 28 reliefs the action takes place on a flat platform parallel with the base of the relief, and in all save the landscape scenes the setting is constructed with a dominant vertical and horizontal emphasis. A typical example is the scene of "The disciples visit St John," where the architecture forms an internal containing rectangle.
View the arrangement of the panels on the doors.
