## Commentary

Sts George and Demetrius of Thessalonika c. 1100 Carved dark slate with gilding, 20 x 14 cm The Hermitage, St. Petersburg This icon depicting the holy warriors George and Demetrius was found in 1894 in the Crimea during excavations. It was shattered into at least 15 fragments. Iconographic and stylistic peculiarities identify it as coming from a Thessalonian workshop.
