# Portrait of Antonio Canova [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [LAMPI, Johann Baptist II]() - Date: 1801-1850 - Technique: Oil on canvas, 113 x 93 cm ## Commentary Like his father, Lampi the Younger was a successful portraitist. The portrait of Canova is a replica by the son of the original version by his father. The monumental sculpture of the mourning genius, depicted in the portrait, is a detail from the <A onclick="return OpenOther\('/html/c/canova/2/0tomb1.html'\)" HREF="/html/c/canova/2/0tomb1.html">tomb of Maria Christina of Austria.</A> Its instalment in 1805 in the Augustinerkirche in Vienna was supervised by Canova in person.
