## Commentary

Vernet entitled his paintings by beginning with the depicted part of the day. This choice demonstrates how much emphasis he placed onto rendering accurately the ambience effects specific to different daily moments. Although he was commissioned to execute many magnificent and important paintings of well-defined locations, Vernet held more generally onto imaginative scenes. He composed his landscapes and seascapes from various elements taken from nature.
