## Commentary

Liotard had visited all the great cities of Europe, and had painted portraits of Pope Clemens XIII and Empress Maria Theresia by the time he returned to his home town of Geneva as portraitist to high society. This painting represents Marie-Adelaide \(1732-1800\), the third daughter of Louis XV.
