## Commentary

Madonna and Child c. 1430 Marble, height 130 cm Mascoli Chapel, Basilica di San Marco, Venice This statue is on the altar of the Mascoli Chapel in the Basilica di San Marco, Venice. The hallmark of this anonymous sculptor is his clever use of forms from Ghiberti&#39;s repertoire. For the figure of the Madonna, he followed a type coined by Nino Pisano for the &lt;a onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/p/pisano1/nino/various/virginc1.html&#39;\)&#34; href=&#34;/html/p/pisano1/nino/various/virginc1.html&#34;&gt;Madonna in Santa Maria Novella&lt;/a&gt; in Florence, merely adapting it to Ghiberti&#39;s style.
