Some fifty works have been attributed to an unknown Cologne master, referred to for convenience as the Master of Saint Veronica, including The Man of Sorrows with the Virgin and Saint Catherine. The panel's slender, almost boneless figures, depicted against a gilded ground, its combination of colours and its delicate mysticism make it characteristic of the medieval Cologne school.
