## Commentary

In 1395 Niccolò di Piero was awarded his first major figural commission for the over life-size statues of St Augustine and St Gregory for the cathedral façade. The figures were finished in 1401 and were partially recarved in the 16th century. Pietro di Giovanni Tedesco was given the commission for the other two doctors of the church at the same time.
