## Commentary

The Last Judgment is the only painting which can be definitely ascribed to Jean Cousin the Younger. It shows his style in later life: innumerable figures in a vast space but on a small canvas. It is painted with great finesse but little energy and displays a sophisticated sense of colour. Here he is playing on the theme of the puniness of humanity, which is made to swarm over the earth like worms. His formula is a Florentine one, although the actual types of figures suggest a Flemish influence.
