## Commentary

The close political contact between England and the eastern Mediterranean region explains the strong Byzantine influence in English Romanesque painting. Unfortunately only very few examples of fresco painting survived. The picture shows an example from the Saint Gabriel&#39;s Chapel in Canterbury Cathedral.
