## Commentary

This well-known woodcut in the Ship of Fool portrays a learned fool in the chamber that throughout the 15th century provided the background for depictions of St &lt;A onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/g/ghirland/domenico/3fresco/1jerome.html&#39;\)&#34; HREF=&#34;/html/g/ghirland/domenico/3fresco/1jerome.html&#34;&gt;Jerome,&lt;/A&gt; St &lt;A onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/b/botticel/21/5augustu.html&#39;\)&#34; HREF=&#34;/html/b/botticel/21/5augustu.html&#34;&gt;Augustine&lt;/A&gt; and other learned men.
