# Interior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, French]() - Date: 1151-1200 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary In the last third of the 12th century, a new choir was built in the abbey church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. Vézelay was at that time a much visited pilgrimage town, where the relics of St Mary Magdalene were kept. The new Gothic choir contrasts with the older Romanesque nave. The choir not only define the interior space but also contributes to the impressive outline of the church as a whole, which, because it stands on the highest point of a hill overlooking Vézelay, is visible from far away.
