## Commentary

Proposal for a modern sewer system c. 1769 Engraving Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris The French architect and theorist Pierre Patte is often credited with having been the first to illustrate a city street with its buildings and sewer system shown in section-a style of rendering that was to revolutionize the way succeeding generations of engineers and architects presented streets and their substructures. Pierre Patte's designs proved highly influential to nineteenth century planners and engineers.
