## Commentary

St Catherine Enthroned with Two Saints and Two Donors c. 1380 Tempera on panel, 54 x 43 cm Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Both the authorship and the exact subject of well-preserved panel have long been a matter of debate. However, the identification of the seated saint as St Catherine, and the authorship of Cenni di Francesco are now accepted. It is unclear whether the panel was intended as an independent votive or devotional image, a valve of a diptych or the centre of a small folding triptych, or part of some larger narrative complex.
