## Commentary

Paul de Vos painted several pictures depicting the theme of the Garden of Eden. It seems likely that he worked on the majority of these at about the same time and then passed them on to his brother-in-law, Jan Wildens, for the completion of the landscape backgrounds. It should be noted that the lion which recurs in all the paintings in this group is inspired by Rubens's rendering of the lion in his The Meeting of Marie de Médicis and Henri IV at Lyon for the Medici cycle.
