## Commentary

Landscape with St John the Evangelist at Patmos 1598 Oil on panel, 133 x 192 cm The Hermitage, St. Petersburg This painting is an example of the landscape compositions painted by Verhaecht in the first years of his activity as an artist in Antwerp. These panoramic landscapes of bizarre and striking rock formations, with sharp and conical outlines, evoke a clear relationship with the landscape painters of the first half of the sixteenth century, who worked in the tradition of Joachim Patenier.
