# Exterior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, German]() - Date: 1201-1250 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary After cathedrals, the greatest buildings of the Middle Ages were the castles. The medieval castle was the focus of court life. Castles had to satisfy two primary requirements: they had to provide a strong defence against attack and a well organized setting for the social life of the community in general and the court in particular. Lichtenberg Castle north of Stuttgart is among the few medieval German castles to have been preserved complete.
