## Commentary

In the southern Netherlands there was a change around the middle of the seventeenth century, with the appearance o luxuriantly decorative religious buildings, such as the Jesuit church of St. Michael in Leuven, designed by Willem Hesius \(1601-0690\), a Flemish priest, poet, and architect. The towering façades of these churches mostly fronted basilicas with three aisles where the Gothic were combined with classical orders of architecture and Mannerist forms of decoration. The photo shows the west front of St. Michael church.
