## Commentary

Temptation of St Anthony 1634 Black chalk, bister pen and wash, sanguine, and gouache, 45 x 67 cm The Hermitage, St. Petersburg In less than two decades, Callot progressed from depictions of strange semifantastic figures - theatrical stock characters - to complex large-scale compositions on small etching plates. The present drawing is a sketch for an etching.
