## Commentary

The machine was devised by Pierre Patte, the engraving was made by Benoît Louis Prévost \(1735-1804\) after Jacques-Raymond Lucotte \(1733-1804\). The engraving is Plate XXI in &#34;Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts, et des métiers&#34; by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d&#39;Alembert \(Paris, 1762-1773\).
