## Commentary

The New Generation c. 1900 Oil on canvas, 121 x 132 cm Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam Jan Toorop was one of the most significant Symbolist artists around 1900. He used a very personal style of parallel wavy lines that became the &#39;salad oil style&#39;, named after a poster that Toorop made for salad oil. The child in the high chair is Toorop&#39;s daughter Charley; she would later become an artist herself.
