## Commentary

One of the most significant works from the period of the transition from Late Gothic \(which survived a long time in France\) to the Renaissance is the nave of the parish church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris. The reconstruction of the earlier church began in 1492 with the choir, completed in 1540. With its enormous arcades and low clerestory it repeats in Renaissance forms the layout of the choir. With pointed arcades cutting into columnar piers, and the "flaming" tracery work of the windows, this nave is still completely indebted to Late Gothic. The enormous heightening of the arcades is reminiscent of the cathedral of Bourges, while the raised gallery in the aisles may have been inspired by the cathedral in Rouen. First mentioned in 1541, the unique choir screen, which spans the central nave in a wide openwork arch, is completely in the spirit of the Catholic Church's Tridentine reform of the liturgy, for it allows a clear view of the choir for those attending the mass. Winding round the eastern pillars of the crossing several times, the two spiral staircases lead into the gallery surrounding the inner choir. It is suggested that the choir screen with the spiral staircases is the work of Philibert Delorme. The photo shows the choir.
