## Commentary

This portrait represents a young bearded gentleman, three-quarter length standing, holding a carnation in one hand and the hilt of a sword in the other. It has been assumed that the sitter is to be identified with the anatomist Andreas Vesalius \(1514-1564\), however, it is not verified.
