# Shipping in Stormy Seas [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [PORCELLIS, Jan]() - Date: 1601-1650 - Technique: Oil on canvas, 55 x 100 cm ## Commentary Porcellis specialised in marine paintings, or seascapes. While the traditional seascape was usually a 'portrait' of a certain ship or an 'account' of a naval battle, Porcellis concentrated mainly on the rendering of light and atmosphere. The ships play a subordinate role. Porcellis used only a few colours, mostly shades of grey-blue and brown.
