# Everard 't Serclaes Memorial [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [DILLENS, Julien]() - Date: 1851-1900 - Technique: Bronze ## Commentary This memorial was commissioned in 1898 for the arches of the Maison de l'Étoile in the Grand Place in Brussels. It comprises a number of registers in which the exploits of the alderman of Brussels, Everard 't Serclaes, who drove foreign soldiers from the city in 1356 but who was murdered in 1388, are recounted in three reliefs. In the centre of this shrine, the mutilated body of 't Serclaes, whose tongue was torn out, is shown half-emerging from the shroud at what for passers-by is eye-level. The artist seeks to stir feelings by juxtaposing illustrations of his subject's earthly glory in small-format tableaux with the final state of his body, which is shown life-sized. ## Attribution [Web Gallery of Art]()
