## Commentary

Surviving sketchbooks of van Goyen reveals that he had captured landscape motifs in countless drawings, which were later used as the basis of his compositions in his studio. In the Rhine at Arnhem, the landmarks of the town - the Groote Kerk with its 100-metre-high tower and the smaller Church of St Walpurgis with its Gothic twin-towered façade - rise out of the rapidly sketched houses.
