# Descent from the Cross [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [UNKNOWN MASTER, German]() - Date: 1101-1150 - Technique: Relief on rock, 549 cm x 320 cm ## Commentary Descent from the Cross c. 1115 Relief on rock, 549 cm x 320 cm Externsteine near Horn This unusual Romanesque relief, a monumental free-standing sculpture, in the Externsteine \(Extern rocks\) near Horn in East Westphalia is an ancient heathen ceremonial site. The Benedictine monastery of Abdinghof in Paderborn gained the property rights in 1093, Abbot Gumpert wanted to build a hermitage there. It was decided to have an imitation of the religious sites in Jerusalem carved into the rocks here.
