## Commentary

In his Dead Partridge Jan Baptist Weenix had been inspired by an old tradition which can be traced back as far as Jacopo de&#39; Barbari and Lucas Cranach the Elder. Such dead animals can also be found in the paintings of Willem van Aelst.
