## Commentary

The sitter has been identified as Friedrich IV von Sachsen-Gotha. Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein executed the portrait in Rome \(St. Peter&#39;s Basilica appears through the window\) in honour of the Duke&#39;s conversion to Catholicism. The portrait represents a perfect blending of Neoclassical refinement and Biedermeier attention to detail.
