# Exterior view [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [ARCHITECT, Spanish]() - Date: 1151-1200 - Technique: Photo ## Commentary Monastery of San Juan de la Peña was one of the most important monasteries in Aragon in the Middle Ages. Its two-level church is partially carved in the stone of the great cliff that overhangs the foundation. \(San Juan de la Peña means "Saint John of the Cliff"\). All that is left of the monastery are a few ruins, and the building had never been on a particularly large or ambitious scale. The church was used as the burial chamber for the kings of Aragon.
