# Madonna and Child [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MAIANO, Benedetto da]() - Date: 1451-1500 - Technique: Marble, 71 x 55 cm ## Commentary Madonna and Child c. 1490 Marble, 71 x 55 cm Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York In his choice of subject and its treatment, Benedetto da Maiano followed his master Antonio Rossellino and his near-contemporary Desiderio da Settignano, but his work has a particular solidity and monumentality. The marble relief shows the characteristic motif of the Child tugging playfully on the Virgin's scarf.
