## Commentary

Joseph Heintz the Younger was a decent but mediocre painter who represented important moments in Italian civilization: ceremonies and celebrations. He illustrated the Feast of the Redeemer depicting an extraordinary, lavish cortège with the doge, the patriarch, noblemen, the jubilant populace, and countless boats and gondolas in Saint Mark's Basin. It was a light-hearted festival, unlike the eminently religious ceremony honouring the Redeemer.
