# Gospel Book [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MINIATURIST, English]() - Date: 1101-1150 - Technique: Manuscript \(Royal Ms. I.B.XI\) ## Commentary The picture shows the opening page \(folio 72r\) of St Luke from an unfinished manuscript, a Gospel Book from St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury. Unfinished manuscripts give an idea of the sequence of illuminating an initial. The design has been drawn in pencil and then inked over in preparation for painting. The rubricator has filled in the opening words of the text in alternately red and dark blue letters, following guide words still faintly visible at the top right.
