# St Philip Baptizing the Eunuch of Candace [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [VIGNON, Claude]() - Date: 1601-1650 - Technique: Engraving ## Commentary In the 17th century in France, famous painters all had their official engraver, unless they produced engravings of their own works. Claude Vignon provides an interesting example. He produced the traditional May painting for Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1638, commissioned by the Goldsmiths' Guild and titled St Philip Baptizing the Eunuch of Candace. Although the original work has been lost, it is known by a \(reversed\) engraving executed by the painter himself.
