# Portrait of Pieter Gillis [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [MASSYS, Quentin]() - Date: 1451-1500 - Technique: Oil on panel, transferred to canvas, 59 x 47 cm ## Commentary This is one panel of a diptych the second panel of which representing Erasmus of Rotterdam is in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome. Pieter Gillis \(1486-1533\), also known by his latinised name "Petrus Aegidius", was a humanist, printer and secretary for the city of Antwerp in the early sixteenth century. He is most famous as the friend and supporter of Rodolphus Agricola, Desiderius Erasmus and Thomas More.
