## Commentary

The picture shows the central panel of a triptych. The altarpiece was originally in the private chapel of the splendid Prager Hof in Cologne, to which the donor Nicasius Hackenay belonged and in which Emperor Maximilian often stayed. This curious triptych with its broad central panel, presents an irregular frieze of striding apostles in various states of activity, before and behind the long bed of the Virgin.
