# Henry, Prince of Wales [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [GHEERAERTS, Marcus the Younger]() - Date: 1551-1600 - Technique: Oil on canvas, 162 x 117 cm ## Commentary Henry, Prince of Wales c. 1603 Oil on canvas, 162 x 117 cm National Portrait Gallery, London The portrait represents Henry, Prince of Wales \(1594-1612\), the eldest son of James I. Henry is shown wearing the robes and collar of a Knight of the Order of the Garter, an honour he acquired in 1603. The rush matting on which he stands is of the same type as that used in the Long Gallery at Montacute House today.
