# Study of a Twisting Child [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [RAFFAELLO Sanzio]() - Date: 1501-1550 - Technique: Silverpoint, 168 x 119 mm ## Commentary The silverpoint medium allowed for a very particular application when drawing from life. It was used in tandem with small sketchbooks whose paper had been treated with washes of colour, providing a portable means of taking observations from life. One of Raphael's workbooks from which pages have been preserved is known as the 'pink sketchbook,' named after the colour of the prepared sheets. Eleven sheets from this sketchbook are known \(dispersed in various collections\), several of them contain studies around the Madonna and Child theme.
