## Commentary

In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII commissioned this fresco decoration in the Vatican Palace. The allegorical fresco represents the triumph of Christianity \(in the form of Christ&#39;s Cross\) over paganism \(in the form of a destroyed statue\).
