# Boy Playing a Violin [View the canonical artwork record]() ## Artwork - Artist: [HALS, Frans]() - Date: 1601-1650 - Technique: Oil on panel \(lozenge\), 18,4 x 18,8 cm ## Commentary The Frans Hals Museum and the Mauritshuis have together purchased two paintings by Frans Hals at an auction in New York. Boy Playing the Violin and Girl Singing were bought at Sotheby's with the help of the Rembrandt Association, the Mondrian Fund, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science's National Acquisition Fund, the VriendenLoterij lottery and Haarlem municipal council. The paintings are a unique acquisition for the Netherlands, because they may depict Hals' own children, and offer us a glimpse of the Netherlands in the 17th century.
